What Risks Do Pedestrians Face on New Hampshire State Routes at Night?
State routes like Route 12 in Keene are designed primarily for vehicle traffic and often lack the lighting, sidewalks, and crosswalks found in more urban settings. When a pedestrian is in or near a travel lane after dark, visibility becomes a serious concern for drivers, particularly those operating large commercial vehicles. Tractor-trailers require much more distance to stop than passenger cars, and a driver may have only seconds to react to someone in the road.
Nighttime pedestrian crashes on New Hampshire highways tend to be severe because of the speed of traffic and the limited visibility available to both drivers and pedestrians. The absence of dedicated pedestrian infrastructure on many state routes adds to the danger. These factors make it especially difficult to avoid a tragedy when a person ends up on the roadway unexpectedly.
