Kelso, WA (April 20, 2026) – An 18-year-old high school student was killed and three others were hurt in a rollover crash Saturday, April 18, in Cowlitz County.
Emergency units responded to a rural private road in Kelso and found an SUV overturned on its side. The victim, identified as Ethan Ragsdale, was trapped beneath the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Three other teenagers who were in the SUV were taken to a hospital by private vehicle for treatment. The driver, identified as 19-year-old Jacob Manecke Jr., remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Reports indicate the victim was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and alcohol is believed to have been a factor.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.
Rollover Crashes Often Involve Multiple Risk Factors
Rollover crashes can occur when a vehicle loses balance or control, especially on uneven or narrow roads. SUVs are more prone to rollovers due to their higher center of gravity, particularly during sharp turns or sudden movements.
Seat belt use can affect the outcome in these crashes. Without proper restraint, occupants may be thrown from the vehicle or trapped underneath it. This increases the chance of severe injury or death.
Other contributing factors may include road conditions and driver behavior. Driving under the influence can reduce reaction time and control, making it harder to respond to changing road conditions or hazards.
