Kent, WA (March 4, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash temporarily shut down several southbound lanes of Interstate 5 in Kent on Tuesday afternoon, causing significant traffic delays before the roadway was fully reopened.
The collision occurred near South 272nd Street and initially blocked four southbound lanes of Interstate 5. According to the Washington State Patrol, multiple vehicles were involved in the crash.
Trooper Rick Johnson of the Washington State Patrol confirmed that at least one person sustained injuries in the collision. However, authorities have not released details regarding the total number of vehicles involved or the severity of the injuries.
The Washington State Department of Transportation reported that all four southbound lanes were reopened shortly before 1:30 p.m., restoring normal traffic flow in the area.

We extend our thoughts to those injured and hope for a swift recovery.
Crashes on Major Highways Can Increase Injury Risk
Collisions involving multiple vehicles on high-speed interstates such as I-5 often result in extended traffic backups and increased risk of secondary crashes. Heavy traffic volume, sudden braking, following distance, and lane changes are common factors examined in these investigations.
When several lanes are blocked, emergency crews must secure the scene, assist injured individuals, and clear damaged vehicles before traffic can safely resume. Even after reopening, residual congestion may persist as traffic patterns stabilize.
Motorists traveling through active crash zones are required to reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, and remain alert to changing roadway conditions.
