Kershaw County, SC (March 1, 2026) – In an updated report, a 19-year-old Tennessee teen has been identified as the victim of a three-vehicle crash that happened on Friday night, February 27, on I-20 near the 92-mile marker close to Lugoff.
The collision occurred just before 8 p.m. when a 2016 International tractor-trailer was traveling east on the interstate. A 2014 Dodge driving behind the truck struck it from the rear, according to authorities.
The impact caused the tractor-trailer to move into the median and overturn. The Dodge continued through the median barrier and entered the westbound lanes. A 2026 Volvo tractor-trailer then collided with the Dodge in the westbound lanes.
The Kershaw County Coroner’s Office identified the Dodge driver as 19-year-old Chelsea Emily Moran of Chattanooga, Tennessee. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Why Interstate Median Crashes Often Lead to Serious Outcomes
Crashes on interstates can become more severe when a vehicle crosses the median into opposing traffic. Drivers traveling at highway speeds often have only seconds to react to sudden hazards.
Large trucks can increase the impact force due to their size and weight. When a tractor-trailer overturns or blocks lanes, it can quickly create dangerous conditions for nearby drivers.
Although median barriers are built to reduce crossover accidents, strong impacts may still push vehicles into oncoming lanes. When that happens, multiple vehicles can become involved within moments, raising the risk of fatal injuries.
