Why Are Pedestrian Accidents More Common on Multi-Lane Highways?
Multi-lane highways like Chapman Highway carry steady traffic throughout the evening. Vehicles often travel at higher speeds, which reduces the time drivers have to react when someone enters the roadway.
Crossing outside of marked crosswalks can increase the risk of being struck, especially after dark. Limited visibility, headlights from oncoming traffic, and road design can make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians in time to stop.
Pedestrian crashes on major corridors often result in severe injuries because of vehicle speed and impact force. Using designated crossing areas and remaining alert to traffic patterns may help reduce the likelihood of these tragic accidents.
