Why Intersections Between Local Roads and Highways Can Be High-Risk
Crashes at intersections where a smaller road meets a highway often happen when drivers misjudge the speed or distance of oncoming traffic. Vehicles on the main highway usually travel faster and do not have to stop, which reduces the time available for others to cross safely.
When a large commercial truck is involved, the difference in size and weight can lead to severe damage to the smaller vehicle. The force of impact is often greater, especially in side collisions.
Seat belt use also affects injury outcomes in these situations. Occupants who are not restrained face a higher chance of being ejected or seriously hurt during a crash.
