Lafayette, LA (January 7, 2026) – A devastating three-vehicle crash resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left one person injured in Lafayette on January 7. The collision occurred during dense morning fog and forced the closure of a major intersection for several hours.
According to Sergeant Robin Green of the Lafayette Police Department, the victims were identified as Cherita Washington, 36, and Chase Washington, 17, both of Duson, along with Joseph Prejean, 21, of Lafayette. All three tragically died from injuries sustained in the crash. A fourth individual was transported to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries.
The crash scene remained active for much of the morning as authorities conducted an investigation and worked to clear the roadway. Officials have not yet confirmed the sequence of events that led to the fatal collision or the specific intersection involved.
Police are continuing to examine the factors surrounding the incident, including weather conditions, driver visibility, and possible contributing causes.
