Lakeland, FL (May 19, 2026) – A three-vehicle wreck on the Polk Parkway near I-4 claimed the life of a 42-year-old Winter Haven man. The fatal crash happened around 6 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, near the western end of the parkway where it connects with I-4.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Toyota sedan was traveling west behind a semi-tractor-trailer when traffic ahead began to slow. Investigators said a Ford pickup towing a utility trailer failed to reduce speed and struck the Toyota from behind. The force pushed the sedan into the back of the semi, leaving it crushed between both vehicles.
The driver of the Toyota died at the site. The pickup driver, a 26-year-old man from Auburndale, and the semi driver, a 50-year-old Lakeland man, were not hurt. Names of the people involved were not released in the initial report.
Troopers are still working to determine all factors that led to the fatal wreck. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the loved ones of the man who lost his life.
How Rear-End Crashes Involving Large Trucks Can Become Severe
Rear-end crashes involving commercial trucks or vehicles towing trailers often lead to serious damage because of the size and weight difference between the vehicles involved. When traffic slows suddenly on highways, drivers behind must have enough distance and time to stop safely. Even a brief delay in braking can lead to major chain-reaction collisions.
Crashes involving semi-trucks can become more dangerous when a smaller passenger car is caught between larger vehicles. Highway speeds also increase the force involved, especially during morning travel periods with heavier traffic flow. Investigators often review braking patterns, traffic movement, roadway visibility, and vehicle spacing to better understand how these collisions occur. Mechanical issues, distraction, fatigue, and following too closely are also common factors examined after major highway crashes.
