How Do Pedestrian Crashes Become Fatal So Quickly?
Pedestrian crashes often result in severe or fatal injuries because individuals have no physical protection when struck by a vehicle. Even at moderate speeds, the force of impact can cause life-threatening trauma, particularly when the person is thrown onto the roadway or into nearby objects.
Rural or less densely populated roads, like those found in parts of Lancaster, can increase the risk. These areas may have limited lighting, higher speed limits, and fewer designated crossing points, all of which can make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians in time to react.
Driver awareness and pedestrian visibility both play a major role in preventing these tragedies. Wearing reflective clothing, using crosswalks when available, and remaining alert to traffic conditions can help reduce risks, while drivers should remain cautious and attentive, especially in areas where pedestrian activity may be unexpected.
