Why Multi-Vehicle Crashes Often Close Major Highways
Highways like Rte 283 carry steady traffic throughout the day and into the night. When multiple vehicles are involved in a crash, the scene can quickly become complex and hazardous.
Late-night crashes may involve reduced visibility and higher travel speeds. Drivers may have less time to react if traffic slows suddenly. When several vehicles collide, debris can scatter across multiple lanes, making it unsafe for other motorists to pass.
Closing both directions of a highway allows crews to clear damaged vehicles, remove debris, and restore safe travel conditions. Multi-vehicle crashes often require careful scene management, especially when a fatality occurs. These incidents can disrupt travel for hours due to the scale of the response and cleanup efforts.
