Safety Concerns on Rural Roads Without Marked Crossings
Rural roadways often lack sidewalks, crosswalks, and traffic signals, which can increase risks for pedestrians. Roads like S Eighty Eight Rd may have higher speed limits and limited shoulder space, leaving little room for people walking near or across traffic lanes.
Children are especially vulnerable on these types of roads. Their smaller size makes them harder for drivers to see, and they may misjudge how quickly a vehicle is approaching. Even in clear weather, sightlines can be limited by curves, hills, or roadside features.
Drivers traveling through residential or rural communities are encouraged to remain alert for pedestrians at all times. Slowing down in areas where homes are nearby and scanning both sides of the roadway can help reduce the risk of tragic incidents involving children.
