Sanibel, FL (May 25, 2026) – Two vehicles were involved in a crash on the Sanibel Causeway that left at least one of them charred with fire damage. The crash closed both lanes of the causeway overnight before the roadway was reopened. Images from the scene show what appears to be two cars, one bearing visible scorch marks consistent with fire.
Whether anyone was hurt in the crash has not been confirmed, since no identities were released following the crash, and no arrests had been publicly reported as of this writing. Also, the cause of the crash is still being determined, and further details will be made available as the inquiry progresses. We hope for the full recovery of anyone who may have been hurt.
The causeway has since been reopened to traffic.
What Typically Happens When a Car Fire Occurs Following a Crash in Florida?
Car fires following crashes are more common than many people realize. In Florida’s warm climate, heat-related mechanical stress can make vehicles more prone to ignition after a collision. When a crash causes fuel lines, electrical systems, or engine components to rupture, a fire can start quickly, sometimes within seconds.
After a crash involving fire, investigators typically examine the point of ignition, the fuel source, and any mechanical failures that may have contributed. Traffic and surveillance cameras, if present, may also be reviewed. Vehicle fires can complicate evidence collection, making it harder to determine the precise cause and sequence of events. This is why crash-related fire investigations often take longer to complete than standard collision reviews.
