East Norriton, PA (September 8, 2026) – A 29-year-old Lansdowne man died Sunday, September 6, night after being struck by a car and then a tractor-trailer while in the roadway at West Germantown Pike and Whitehall Road, according to East Norriton Township Police. Officers responded around 9:10 p.m. after an eastbound vehicle struck him; he was then struck by the truck.

He was taken to Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Both drivers stopped and remained at the scene; police said the car’s driver was believed to be impaired and was taken into custody.

The investigation remains ongoing. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones.

Why Are Pedestrians at Extreme Risk of Being Struck a Second Time After an Initial Crash?

Once someone is down in the roadway after being hit, they become far harder for approaching drivers to anticipate, especially in the dark. A driver’s attention is typically focused on other vehicles and the road ahead, not on the possibility of a person lying in a travel lane.

Larger vehicles like tractor-trailers add extra danger in this kind of situation, since they require far more distance to stop even under ideal conditions, let alone with a hazard that only becomes visible at close range. A truck driver approaching the same stretch of road moments after the first impact has very little opportunity to avoid a person already down.

Investigators typically examine the timing between both impacts, along with each vehicle’s speed and visibility conditions, to reconstruct how the crash unfolded across those critical seconds. This kind of review helps establish whether either driver had a reasonable chance to see and react to the danger ahead.
