Frequently Asked Questions
Does road surface affect how safe a motorcycle ride is?
Yes. Loose gravel, wet pavement, oil slicks, and uneven lanes cut down on tire grip much faster for a motorcycle than for a car, making it harder for a rider to brake or turn safely.
What gear actually helps protect a rider in a crash?
A DOT-approved helmet, a sturdy jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots cut down on head injuries and road rash. Armored gear built for riding offers more protection than everyday clothing.
What usually causes motorcycle crashes?
Common factors include drivers failing to see motorcycles in traffic, speeding, following too closely, and riders or drivers switching lanes without checking properly.
Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause worse injuries than car crashes?
Riders have no frame, airbags, or seatbelt around them, so a crash can throw them directly onto pavement or into another vehicle, leading to more serious injuries at similar speeds compared with a car crash.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Accident in Laredo, TX
If you're involved in a motorcycle crash, try to move to a safe spot out of traffic if you're able, and call 911 right away. Even if injuries seem minor at first, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider, since adrenaline can mask pain from fractures or internal injuries. Get the names and contact information of any witnesses, since their accounts can matter later. Take photos of the scene, the vehicles involved, and any visible injuries if you're able to safely do so. File a report with local police if one hasn't already been started, and keep a copy for your records. Follow up with your doctor in the days after the crash, even if you feel okay, since some injuries take time to show symptoms.
