Frequently Asked Questions
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way once they have entered a marked crosswalk, and drivers turning across it, whether left or right, must yield until the crossing is clear.
How can drivers lower the chance of striking someone crossing the street?
Slowing down at intersections, checking both directions before completing a turn, and avoiding distractions like phones give drivers more time to spot and stop for someone in the road.
What injuries are most common when a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle?
Pedestrians often suffer broken bones, head injuries, and internal injuries, since there is little to protect the body from the impact or from hitting the pavement afterward.
What typically causes these crashes?
Common factors include drivers failing to yield while turning, distracted driving, poor visibility, and pedestrians crossing outside marked crosswalks.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Tulsa, OK
Anyone involved in or who witnesses a pedestrian crash should call 911 right away so medics can evaluate the injured person, even if injuries aren't immediately obvious. It's worth staying at the scene until officers arrive to give a statement, since those details can matter later. Following up with a doctor in the days after the crash is important too, as some injuries, especially to the head or joints, don't show symptoms right away. Keeping any paperwork from police or medical providers can also help if questions come up about what happened.
