Stop-Controlled Intersections Carry Added Risks Near Highways
Stop sign crashes at highway crossings can be dangerous because vehicles may be traveling at very different speeds. A driver entering a highway from a side road may have only a short window to judge oncoming traffic.
At night, visibility can make that decision harder. Headlights, darkness, and limited landmarks may affect how far a driver can see before pulling forward.
Side-impact crashes can also cause serious harm, especially when one vehicle is already moving at highway speed. Medical outcomes usually depend on seat belt use, vehicle size, point of contact, and how quickly care begins. Road design, traffic flow, and sign placement may also help explain how these crashes happen.
