The Connection Between Darkness and Severe Road Injuries
Driving after dark can reduce how far motorists can see pedestrians, vehicles, lane markings, and roadside hazards. Headlight glare and shadows may also make it harder to judge distance or speed.
Intersections create added risks because traffic can approach from several directions. Drivers may be turning, crossing lanes, or continuing straight within the same section of roadway. A short delay in recognizing another vehicle can leave little time to brake.
Injury severity may depend on travel speed, contact angle, and the part of the vehicle that is struck. Side sections usually provide less space to absorb force than the front or rear. Seat belts and airbags can reduce harm, but they cannot prevent every injury during a strong hit.
