What Drivers and Pedestrians Should Know About Nighttime Road Crossing Risks
Pedestrian crashes after dark are far more deadly than those that happen during daylight hours. Low visibility makes it harder for drivers to spot people on or near the road, and darker clothing makes that even more difficult. A driver may have only a fraction of a second to react when a pedestrian steps into traffic at night, particularly on roads without strong lighting.
For pedestrians, crossing at marked intersections and wearing bright or reflective clothing greatly increases the chance of being seen. Drivers, in turn, are less alert at night and may have headlights that don’t fully illuminate far enough ahead to allow for safe stopping. Both sides of the road share responsibility for making nighttime travel safer, and small choices like where and how someone crosses can make a real difference in outcomes.
