How Nighttime Bicycle Crashes Often Occur on Rural Roads
Crashes involving bicycles at night are more likely on rural roads with limited lighting. Drivers may have reduced visibility, especially on roadways without streetlights or with sharp curves. Bicycles can also be harder to spot without reflective gear or proper lighting.
Speed differences between vehicles and bicycles can also lead to sudden impacts. When both are moving in the same direction, a driver may not notice a cyclist ahead until it is too late to react safely.
Road conditions can further affect visibility and reaction time. Narrow shoulders, uneven pavement, or limited passing space may increase the risk. These factors can combine quickly, especially during nighttime travel, leading to serious outcomes in the event of a crash.
