Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are common in rollover crashes?
Occupants can suffer head, neck and spinal injuries, broken bones, and cuts from broken glass, especially if they are thrown against the roof or interior as the vehicle turns over. Seatbelt use significantly lowers the chance of being ejected or thrown around the cabin.
What causes a vehicle to roll over?
Rollovers often happen when a vehicle's momentum and the angle of impact or a sharp steering input cause it to tip, commonly after a side impact, a sudden swerve, or leaving the roadway and striking soft shoulder or a curb.
Why are rollover crashes so dangerous?
A vehicle that rolls can strike occupants from multiple directions as it turns, and the roof can crush inward under the weight of the vehicle, raising the risk of serious injury even at lower speeds.
Which vehicles are most prone to rollovers?
Taller, narrower vehicles with a higher center of gravity, such as pickup trucks and SUVs, roll over more easily than low, wide sedans, though any vehicle can roll under the right conditions.
What to Do After a Rollover Crash in Level Plains, AL
If you're involved in a rollover, stay as still as possible until you can assess for pain or injury before moving, since adrenaline can mask the early signs of a broken bone or spinal injury. Call 911 even if injuries seem minor, and let paramedics check everyone involved. Get the names and contact information of any witnesses, since accounts of how the vehicles collided can matter later. Request a copy of the official police report once it's available, and see a doctor in the days after the crash if new pain, stiffness or dizziness shows up, even if you felt fine at the scene.
