What Risks Do Ambulance Crews Face on the Road in Illinois?
Ambulance crews in Illinois face a unique set of hazards every time they respond to a call or transport a patient. Emergency vehicles moving through intersections are at particular risk, even when lights and sirens are active, because not all drivers respond quickly enough to clear the way. The combination of speed, urgency, and unpredictable traffic makes intersection crossings one of the most dangerous moments of any emergency run.
When an ambulance is involved in a crash, the consequences can extend beyond the crew. Patients already receiving care in the back of the vehicle are especially vulnerable to further harm. Illinois has laws requiring drivers to yield to emergency vehicles, but collisions still occur with some regularity across the state. Understanding how these crashes happen helps communities and emergency services work toward safer response protocols.
