What Makes Failure-to-Yield Crashes Common at Rural Iowa Intersections?
Failure-to-yield crashes are among the most frequent collision types at rural highway intersections across Iowa. When a driver attempts to turn across oncoming traffic on a highway like Route 1, correctly judging the speed and distance of approaching vehicles is critical. Misjudging that gap — even slightly — can lead to a direct broadside or front-end impact with little time for either driver to react.
Rural intersections in Linn County and across Iowa often lack traffic signals or dedicated turn lanes, placing full responsibility on the turning driver to wait for a safe opening. Visibility can also be a factor, particularly in the early evening when the sun angle is low or light is fading. These conditions make intersections where side roads meet state highways a recurring location for injury crashes throughout the state.
