Frequently Asked Questions
What factors make a crash more likely to be fatal?
Higher speeds, the angle of impact, and whether occupants are restrained all play a role in whether a crash proves fatal. Intersection crashes can be especially serious because vehicles often collide at sharp angles with little warning.
How does speed affect crash survivability?
Even modest increases in speed raise the force involved in a collision substantially, which lowers the chances of walking away without serious injury.
Why does seat belt use matter so much?
Seat belts keep occupants from being thrown within or out of the vehicle during a crash, which is often what separates survivable collisions from fatal ones.
What should families do after a fatal crash?
Families can request the official crash report from the investigating agency, which in this case is Illinois State Police, and may want to ask the agency directly about next steps or available resources.
