SOCORRO, El Paso County, Texas, Oct. 21, 2026 — A 63-year-old Socorro woman died Tuesday morning, October 20, after a three-vehicle crash on North Loop Drive. The City of Socorro said officers responded to the 11400 block around 10:22 a.m.
Investigators believe a silver 2017 Kia Soul had stopped to wait for traffic to clear before turning when a red 2004 Ford Mustang struck it from behind, according to the city. The impact reportedly pushed the Kia into oncoming lanes, where it collided with a black 2023 Nissan Rogue.
First responders performed CPR on the Kia's driver. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died of her injuries. The Nissan's driver, a 26-year-old woman, and a 1-year-old passenger in that vehicle were also hospitalized with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The 21-year-old driver of the Mustang reported no injuries.
North Loop Drive between Barnhart Drive and Sunset Valley Avenue was closed for much of the day while crews worked the scene, with reopening expected around 8 p.m., the city said. It remains unclear whether the Mustang's driver will face charges; the case is still under investigation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does low visibility or sun glare factor into multi-vehicle crashes like this one?
Bright glare, fog, or sudden stops can all limit a driver's reaction time. When one vehicle brakes or stops to turn, a trailing driver who can't see clearly or react in time may rear-end it, setting off a chain reaction into other lanes.
Why does following distance matter so much in traffic?
Leaving more space behind the car ahead gives a driver time to brake safely if that vehicle slows or stops unexpectedly. Tailgating is a common factor in rear-end crashes that then spread into other vehicles or lanes.
Are secondary crashes common once an initial crash happens?
Yes. A stopped or slowed vehicle can become a hazard for traffic behind it, and a single collision can trigger a second or third impact within seconds, especially on roads without a shoulder to pull into.
What makes multi-vehicle crashes harder to investigate?
With three or more vehicles involved, investigators have to reconstruct the order of impacts, speeds, and driver actions from physical evidence, witness accounts, and sometimes vehicle data, which can take longer than a two-car crash.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Socorro, TX
If you're involved in a crash with multiple vehicles, try tostay as calm as possible and check yourself and any passengers for injuries before stepping out, if it's safe to do so. Call 911 right away so officers and medical crews can respond and manage traffic around the scene. Even if you feel fine, consider getting checked by a medical professional, since some injuries from impacts like this don't show symptoms right away. Don't forget to exchange information with other drivers if you're able, and try to note what you saw, since multi-vehicle crashes often involve more than one version of events. Keep a copy of the police report for your records once it's available.
