Why Interstate Crashes Often Cause Major Traffic Delays
Crashes on busy interstate highways can quickly lead to traffic congestion, especially when shoulders or travel lanes are blocked. Even minor lane closures may slow traffic for miles during periods of steady vehicle flow.
Investigators commonly review vehicle positions, roadway conditions, and traffic patterns after highway crashes. Skid marks, debris, and witness statements can help determine how the collision occurred and whether additional factors contributed to the incident.
Emergency response on interstates may also require temporary lane restrictions to protect responders and allow damaged vehicles to be removed safely. Delays can continue even after lanes reopen as traffic gradually returns to normal flow.
