LONG BEACH, Los Angeles County, Calif., Oct. 28, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash with at least one reported injury shut lanes on eastbound State Route 91 just west of Cherry Avenue early Wednesday morning, October 28, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The California Highway Patrol said the incident began before 5 a.m. as a report of a blue Honda Civic blocking a right lane on the roadway. Within minutes, a caller reported that an unknown vehicle had collided with their car, and the agency's log listed a person involved as injured. The report was then upgraded to a traffic collision, and an ambulance was requested.
Logs show the crash grew to involve additional vehicles. One car was reported facing sideways and blocking the slow lane, and a later update described both vehicles blocking the slow lane while a separate vehicle blocked the number 1 and number 2 lanes, prompting a request for a second tow truck. Long Beach Fire Department units responded to the scene, CHP records show.
The cause of the collision has not been released and remains under investigation. It is not known how many people were hurt or the extent of their injuries. Tow crews were called to clear the vehicles from the freeway as crews worked to restore normal traffic flow.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most traffic accidents happen?
Many crashes cluster on busy freeway corridors and interchanges, especially where merging traffic, lane changes, or reduced visibility during early morning or nighttime hours increase the chance of a collision.
How can drivers reduce their crash risk?
Staying alert, keeping a safe following distance, and slowing down in congested or poorly lit areas all help drivers react in time when another vehicle merges unexpectedly or stops short.
What injuries are most common in car accidents?
Whiplash, bruising, and soft tissue injuries are common in lower speed impacts, while higher speed freeway collisions can cause more serious injuries such as fractures or head trauma.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Long Beach, CA
If you're involved in a crash on a freeway like SR-91, try to move to a safe area if your vehicle is drivable and turn on hazard lights to warn oncoming traffic. Check yourself and any passengers for injuries, and call 911 even if injuries seem minor, since some symptoms take hours to appear. Exchange information with other drivers if it's safe to do so, and wait for CHP or local fire crews to document the scene. Getting a prompt medical evaluation afterward, even for a seemingly minor collision, helps catch injuries early and creates a record that can matter later.
