Frequently Asked Questions
Who has the right of way when a pedestrian is in a crosswalk?
In most states, including North Carolina, a pedestrian in a marked or unmarked crosswalk has the right of way, and drivers must yield. On roads without sidewalks or crosswalks, pedestrians and drivers both share a duty to watch for each other, especially where walking paths cross driveways or neighborhood entrances.
What can drivers do to avoid hitting someone walking along the road?
Slowing down near residential streets and driveways, scanning the roadside before turning or exiting a neighborhood, and staying off phones while driving all give a driver more time to spot a pedestrian. Early morning and low-light hours call for extra caution since visibility is reduced.
What injuries are most common when a vehicle strikes a pedestrian?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles often suffer broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal trauma, since they have no protection against the impact. The severity usually depends on the vehicle's speed and where the person is hit.
What usually causes these kinds of crashes?
Common factors include driver distraction, limited visibility, speeding, and roads without sidewalks that force pedestrians to walk near moving traffic. Investigators typically look at driver attention, vehicle speed, and road conditions when reviewing a crash like this one.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Clayton, NC
If you're involved in or witnessing a pedestrian crash, you should call 911 immediately so medical help and law enforcement can respond. Even if injuries seem minor, it's worth getting checked by a medical professional, since some injuries, like internal bleeding or concussions, aren't obvious right away. If you're a witness, stay at the scene until troopers arrive and share what you saw, since firsthand accounts often matter most in these investigations. Family members of someone involved should ask the responding agency how to obtain a copy of the official crash report once it's completed.
