The SUV driver remained at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators. Officials noted that speed, impairment, and distraction are not suspected factors in the collision.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones.
Why Crossing Outside Crosswalks Can Be Especially Risky at Night
Pedestrian crashes outside marked crosswalks are often more severe, especially at night when visibility is lower. Along busy roads like the Pacific Coast Highway, drivers may not expect someone to cross mid-block, which leaves little time to react.
Urban corridors near rivers and intersections can also lack adequate lighting, making it harder for both pedestrians and drivers to see one another. In fatal incidents like this, location and time of day are often key contributing factors.
Safety advocates encourage pedestrians to use designated crossings whenever possible and to wear visible clothing when walking at night. While driver awareness remains critical, shared responsibility between pedestrians and motorists is essential to reduce tragedies on California roadways.
