LOS ANGELES, Los Angeles County, Calif., Oct. 14, 2026 — A bicyclist was injured on Tuesday morning, October 13, after a car hit him at the southbound Interstate 110 on-ramp at West Manchester Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision involved a silver Honda sedan and a male bicyclist. A person who reported the crash told dispatchers that the Honda's driver had turned right on a red light when she was not supposed to, striking the man, according to the CHP. The circumstances have not been independently confirmed beyond that report.

Responders noted the vehicle was blocking the on-ramp shortly after the crash was called in, around 7:57 a.m. The extent of the bicyclist's injuries has not been released.

The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation. No further details on the driver or any citations have been made public.

We wish the injured a complete and speedy recovery.

What Makes Car-Bicycle Crashes at On-Ramps So Dangerous

On-ramps like the one onto I-110 southbound are built for cars accelerating up to highway speed, not for sharing space with a bicyclist. A driver merging onto an on-ramp is often looking ahead for a gap in freeway traffic, not scanning the intersection behind or beside the vehicle for someone on two wheels. That narrow window of attention is one reason turning movements near ramps catch cyclists off guard.

The mismatch in weight and speed does most of the damage. A car weighs on the order of a ton or more; a bicycle and rider together weigh a small fraction of that. When a car making a turn, even at low speed, meets a bicyclist already in motion, the bicycle has no frame, airbag, or crumple zone to absorb the hit. The energy from the crash is transferred to the bike and the person riding it.

Visibility compounds the risk. Morning glare, parked cars, signal poles, and the angle of a right turn on red can all hide a bicyclist from a driver's sightline until the two are already close. Intersections and ramp approaches are where these blind spots matter most, because a driver's attention is split between the signal, the mirror, and the road ahead.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, bicycle fatalities decreased from 183 in 2022 to 145 in 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

What usually causes car-bicycle collisions?

Common factors include drivers turning without checking for a cyclist, drivers or cyclists running red lights or stop signs, and low-visibility conditions such as glare, dusk, or a cyclist riding outside a driver's expected sightline.

Where do most of these crashes happen?

A large share occur at intersections and ramps, where vehicles are turning, merging, or crossing a cyclist's path, rather than on open stretches of road.

What is "dooring" and why does it matter?

Dooring occurs when someone in a parked car opens a door into a cyclist's path without warning. It is a frequent cause of injury in urban areas with curbside parking and bike lanes.

How can cyclists reduce their exposure to these risks?

Riding with lights and reflective gear, making eye contact with drivers before crossing their path, and avoiding a driver's blind spot at intersections all help a cyclist stay visible.

What to Do After a Bicycle Accident in Los Angeles, CA

If you're involved in a bicycle collision, move to a safe area if you're able and call 911 so paramedics and police can respond. Even if injuries seem minor, a medical evaluation is worth getting, since some injuries, especially head and joint injuries, aren't obvious right away.

Get the responding officer's name and report number, and, if possible, note the other driver's information and any nearby witnesses. Photos of the scene, the vehicle, and the bicycle can help later if questions come up about how the crash happened. Keep any medical paperwork from the visit in case you need it down the line.
