LOS ANGELES, Los Angeles County, Calif., Oct. 8, 2026 — Five vehicles collided on Wednesday morning, October 7, at a busy intersection in downtown Los Angeles, injuring several people, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The crash was reported shortly after 10 a.m. at Main Street and East Washington Boulevard. A pickup truck involved in the wreck sustained heavy front-end damage and came to rest in the intersection, while four other vehicles, including a courtesy car from a local dealership, were left damaged in lanes along East Washington Boulevard.

The pickup truck also ended up on train tracks that run along East Washington Boulevard. The fire department said no trains were affected by the crash.

Five patients were evaluated for injuries at the scene, the fire department reported. It was not immediately clear how many of them needed to be taken to area hospitals. The severity of the injuries has not been released.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No further details have been made public.

We wish the injured a complete and speedy recovery.

Multi-Vehicle Pileups by the Numbers

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 28,595 large-truck occupants were injured in multi-vehicle crashes involving large trucks in 2023. That figure reflects how quickly a single collision involving a truck or larger vehicle can pull in additional cars before anyone has a chance to stop or steer clear.

Pileups like these usually start with one vehicle losing control or stopping suddenly, then multiply as following vehicles run out of room to react. In dense urban corridors, where traffic signals, turning vehicles, and pedestrians add to the mix, a single point of impact can quickly become a chain reaction across several lanes.

Investigators piecing together a multi-vehicle crash typically have to work out not just how the first collision happened, but also the order in which subsequent impacts occurred. That process can take longer than a routine two-car crash, since it often relies on surveillance footage, event data recorders, and witness accounts from multiple drivers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does limited visibility contribute to pileups?

When drivers can't see traffic ahead clearly, whether from fog, glare, or a sudden backup, they have less time to brake or steer around a hazard, which raises the odds that one crash leads to several more behind it.

Why does following distance matter so much in heavy traffic?

Leaving more space between vehicles gives a driver time to react if the car ahead stops abruptly. Tight following distances are a common factor in chain-reaction crashes because there's no cushion when something goes wrong up front.

Do secondary crashes often follow an initial wreck?

Yes. Once a crash blocks lanes, approaching drivers may not see it in time, especially in congested city traffic, which can lead to additional collisions before responders arrive or lanes are cleared.

Why are multi-vehicle crashes harder to investigate than single-car wrecks?

With several vehicles and drivers involved, investigators have to reconstruct a sequence of impacts rather than one event, often relying on multiple witness statements, vehicle data, and video to determine how the chain reaction unfolded.

What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Los Angeles, CA

If you're involved in a pileup, try to stay inside your vehicle if it's unsafe to exit into traffic, and turn on hazard lights if they still work. Check yourself and passengers for injuries before checking on others nearby, and call 911 even if injuries seem minor, since some symptoms take hours to appear.

Once you're safe, get checked out by a medical professional, even if you feel fine at the scene. Adrenaline can mask pain from whiplash or internal injuries. Take photos of all vehicles involved, if possible; note the final positions of the cars; and obtain contact information from other drivers and any witnesses. File a police report and keep a copy for your records, since multi-vehicle crashes often involve multiple insurance claims to sort through.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
