Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes pedestrian crashes like this one?
Pedestrian crashes commonly involve a driver failing to yield at a crosswalk or intersection, impaired or distracted driving, or a pedestrian crossing outside a marked crossing area. Poor lighting and limited visibility at night can also play a role.
How much does a vehicle's speed affect a pedestrian's chance of survival?
Higher vehicle speeds reduce a driver's reaction time and increase the force of impact, which lowers a pedestrian's chances of survival. Lower speeds generally give drivers more time to stop and reduce injury severity in a collision.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
Many pedestrian crashes occur at or near intersections, where vehicles and people on foot cross paths most frequently. Crashes also commonly happen on roads without sidewalks or safe crossing points.
Are pedestrian crashes more common after dark?
Yes, reduced visibility at night makes it harder for drivers to see people crossing the street, and a large share of fatal pedestrian crashes occur during nighttime hours.
