What Increases the Risk of Pedestrian Accidents at Night?
Pedestrian crashes are more likely to occur after dark due to reduced visibility. Drivers may have difficulty seeing a person walking near or across the roadway, especially in poorly lit areas.
Busy highways can add to the risk. Multiple lanes of traffic and higher speed limits may limit a driver’s ability to stop quickly. Pedestrians crossing outside marked crosswalks may also be harder for drivers to anticipate.
Wearing bright or reflective clothing can improve visibility at night. Drivers are encouraged to reduce speed and remain alert in areas where foot traffic may be present.
