Manteca, CA (July 28, 2026) – A major injury crash involving multiple vehicles temporarily shut down all southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near the State Route 120 East connector early on Monday morning, July 27, in Manteca.

According to the California Highway Patrol incident log, the collision was reported shortly after 5:15 a.m. following an iPhone crash detection alert and an open-line 911 call in which dispatchers could hear a man apparently moaning in pain. Initial reports indicated the crash involved a white Chevrolet Equinox, a black Chevrolet pickup truck, and at least one additional vehicle.

Stockton Fire Department crews responded to the scene to assist the injured. The collision blocked the No. 1 lane and the slow lane before all southbound lanes were temporarily closed while emergency personnel treated victims and cleared the wreckage. CHP later upgraded the incident to a major injury collision.

Tow trucks removed the damaged vehicles, and lanes gradually reopened before all southbound traffic resumed normal flow. Authorities have not released the number of injured people or the extent of their injuries. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

We are thinking of everyone involved and wish those injured a full and speedy recovery.

Why Major Freeway Crashes End in Extended Lane Closures?

Serious freeway collisions frequently require extensive emergency response efforts to provide medical care, document the scene, and safely remove damaged vehicles. When multiple vehicles are involved, investigators must carefully reconstruct the sequence of events before the roadway can fully reopen.

Investigators typically examine vehicle damage, roadway evidence, witness statements, electronic crash data, and any available traffic camera footage to determine what led to the collision. These findings help establish the circumstances surrounding the crash and identify any contributing factors.

Temporary freeway closures are necessary to protect emergency responders and motorists while victims receive treatment and recovery crews clear the scene. Although these closures can cause significant traffic delays, they help reduce the risk of secondary crashes during the investigation.
