Fort Lauderdale, FL (July 28, 2026) — A woman was seriously injured when a Brightline train struck her car near North Flagler Drive and East Sunrise Boulevard late on Sunday, July 26.

The southbound train collided with the vehicle shortly before midnight, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue. The impact carried the car along the tracks to the 400 block of Northeast Flagler Drive, where it remained lodged beneath the train.

The driver was able to exit the vehicle without assistance. Emergency crews found her beside the car and transported her to Broward Health Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials have not determined what led to the collision. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

We hope the injured woman makes a full recovery.

Where the Crash Happened: N Flagler Dr and E Sunrise Blvd

North Flagler Drive and East Sunrise Boulevard meet near an active rail corridor in Fort Lauderdale. The location brings roadway traffic across tracks used by Brightline trains traveling through the city.

Rail crossings require road users to respond to warning lights, gates, and approaching trains as they navigate nearby intersections. Because trains remain confined to the tracks and require considerable distance to stop, vehicles must fully clear the crossing area before a train arrives.

What We Know

  • The crash was reported shortly before midnight on Sunday.
  • A southbound Brightline train and a red Genesis were involved.
  • The car was dragged to the 400 block of Northeast Flagler Drive.
  • The driver exited the vehicle on her own.
  • Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported her to Broward Health Medical Center.
  • Her injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening.
  • The cause remains under investigation.

Why Train-Vehicle Collisions Require a Specialized Response

A train carries far greater mass and momentum than a passenger vehicle and cannot quickly move away from an obstruction. When a car becomes trapped beneath a train, responders must address the injured occupant while also determining whether the train and rail corridor are safe to approach.

In this Fort Lauderdale crash, the distance the car traveled after impact will be an important part of documenting the event. Investigators must establish the initial contact point and trace the vehicle’s movement along the tracks before it came to rest.

How This Crash Is Investigated

Investigators may examine the crossing signals, gate operation, train data, surveillance recordings, vehicle damage, and marks along the rail corridor. The train’s onboard systems may help establish its speed, horn use, braking, and location before impact.

Witness accounts can also help reconstruct the timing of the warning system and the movements near the crossing. Investigators will compare those statements with physical and electronic evidence before reaching conclusions about what caused the crash.

What to Do After a Train Collision

People affected by a Florida train collision should preserve medical records, photographs, vehicle information, insurance correspondence, and any documents provided by responding agencies. Because these incidents may involve both roadway and rail evidence, the completed crash report can provide details unavailable during the initial response.

Florida crash reports are maintained by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles through the Florida Crash Portal at services.flhsmv.gov/crashreportpurchasing, also identified as FloridaCrashPortal.gov. The report form is HSMV 90010 (Long/Short Form).

The fee is $10.00 per report plus a $2.00 transaction convenience fee for online requests. Officers have 10 days to file reports, and online reports are available immediately once posted.

During the restricted period, reports may be requested by parties involved, their attorneys or legal representatives, and licensed insurance agents under § 316.066. Florida crash reports remain confidential for the first 60 days and become public afterward.
