MURRAY, Salt Lake County, Utah, Oct. 28, 2026 — A motorcyclist died on Tuesday night, October 27, after colliding with a left-turning truck at the intersection of 5900 South and State St in Murray, according to the Murray Police Department. The rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers responded to the intersection at about 5:40 p.m. The other vehicle involved, a truck turning left onto 5900 South, remained at the scene, and its driver cooperated with investigators. The truck driver was taken to a hospital with injuries described as minor.
Murray Police spokesperson Kristen Reardon said the preliminary account suggests the truck had the right of way to turn when the motorcycle came through traffic stopped at the light and struck it. Reardon said the rider had reportedly been driving at a high rate of speed on 5300 South before the crash. Investigators said they are still working to confirm who legally had the right of way at the moment of impact.
State St was closed in both directions at 5900 South for several hours while crews processed the scene, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. The motorcyclist's identity had not been released as of this report. No charges have been announced, and officials have not said when the crash reconstruction will be finished.
We are deeply sorry for the loss suffered by the victim's family.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should a rider do immediately after a motorcycle crash?
If possible, move to safety, call 911, and avoid moving an injured person unless there's immediate danger. Get checked by medical personnel even if injuries seem minor, and wait for police to document the scene before leaving.
Do motorcycle crashes happen more commonly at intersections?
Collisions at intersections are common because turning vehicles usually misjudge a motorcycle's speed or distance, or fail to see it at all. Left-turn crashes, like this one, are among the most frequent patterns researchers track.
Does road surface affect how a motorcycle handles?
Yes. Loose gravel, wet pavement, and uneven lane markings all reduce a motorcycle's traction more than they would a car's, since a bike relies on a smaller contact patch with the road.
What gear actually helps reduce injury for riders?
A DOT-approved helmet, abrasion-resistant jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots all help reduce injury severity in a fall or collision. None of it prevents a crash, but it can reduce the damage when one happens.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Crash in Murray, UT
Anyone involved in a motorcycle collision in Murray should seek medical evaluation right away, even if pain or injury isn't immediately obvious. Adrenaline can mask symptoms of a head injury or internal bleeding for hours. It also helps to document the scene with photos if you're able, get contact information for any witnesses, and request a copy of the police report once it's filed. Follow up with your own doctor in the days afterward, since some injuries from a motorcycle crash don't fully surface until later.
