Bexar County, TX (August 18, 2026) — A man died after being struck by a vehicle Monday night, August 17, in the 8000 block of FM 78 in northeast Bexar County, according to deputies. He was walking eastbound in the same direction as the vehicle that hit him.
The driver stayed at the scene and showed no signs of impairment, deputies said. The man was taken to a hospital with critical injuries and was later pronounced dead.
The man had not been identified as of this report. Deputies said no criminal elements were suspected. The investigation remained ongoing as this report was filed.

Why Walking Facing Traffic Is Safer Than Walking With It
On roads without sidewalks, the direction a pedestrian walks in relation to traffic can make a real difference in how much warning they have if something goes wrong. Someone walking in the same direction as traffic has no way to see a vehicle drifting toward them from behind, whereas someone facing oncoming traffic can see it approaching and has a chance to react or step farther off the road.
This works both ways, since drivers also benefit when pedestrians face them. A driver approaching from behind a pedestrian has very little time to notice and react if that person steps slightly into the road, whereas a pedestrian facing traffic can see headlights and adjust their own position well before a vehicle gets close.
Safety guidelines generally recommend walking on the left shoulder facing oncoming traffic whenever there’s no sidewalk available. Wearing bright or reflective clothing and carrying a flashlight after dark can further improve visibility, giving both the pedestrian and any approaching driver more time to notice each other before it matters most.
