Boston, MA (June 29, 2026) – A man in his 20s from Haverhill lost his life after a wrong-way driver caused a head-on crash late Saturday night, June 27, on Interstate 93 northbound near Exit 15A. Officials arrived at the accident scene shortly before midnight.
According to the preliminary investigation, an 81-year-old Somerset man was driving a Cadillac Escalade and entered Interstate 93 north at Exit 15B before traveling southbound in the northbound lanes. A Honda Odyssey and an Audi A4 attempted to avoid the wrong-way vehicle and crashed. A family of four inside the Odyssey was taken to a Boston hospital for evaluation.
A short time later, the Escalade struck a Chevrolet Cruze head-on. Both drivers were taken to Boston-area hospitals, where the Cruze driver later died from his injuries. The victim’s identity has not been released. The wrong-way driver is expected to receive a court summons at a later date. Our sympathy goes out to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
How Wrong-Way Highway Crashes Are Reviewed
Wrong-way crashes are among the most serious roadway incidents because vehicles can collide at high speeds as they approach each other. Investigators may examine roadway signs, entry points, vehicle positions, and available video footage to determine how a driver entered the incorrect lanes.
Crash reconstruction may also involve reviewing vehicle damage, witness statements, and roadway conditions. Factors such as visibility, driver actions, and traffic patterns can provide additional context. These details help create a clearer timeline of the events leading up to the collision and may explain how the crash unfolded.
