What Is Smoke Inhalation and Why Can It Be Dangerous?
Smoke inhalation is one of the most common injuries associated with residential fires. Even when flames are limited to one part of a home, smoke can spread quickly through hallways, stairwells, and ventilation systems.
Breathing smoke may expose a person to harmful gases and tiny particles that can damage the lungs and reduce the body’s ability to take in oxygen. Symptoms can include coughing, difficulty breathing, dizziness, and irritation of the eyes or throat.
After a residential fire, medical evaluations often focus on assessing the effects of smoke exposure, even when no visible burns are present. Early treatment can help medical professionals monitor breathing problems and other complications that may develop after exposure to smoke.
