Jefferson County, MO (August 20, 2026) – A 32-year-old man was injured on Tuesday, August 18, after a Chevrolet Sonic struck a Nissan NV200 on MO-21 north of MO-110.

The Nissan was traveling southbound when its 32-year-old driver stopped north of MO-110. The Chevrolet was traveling behind it, and its driver applied the brakes before the front of the Sonic struck the rear of the Nissan.

The Nissan driver suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Mercy Hospital Jefferson for treatment. He was wearing a safety device at the time. The 21-year-old Chevrolet driver was also wearing a safety device, but the report did not list injuries for him.

The Chevrolet was totaled, while the Nissan sustained moderate damage. Towing services removed the vehicles from the roadway. The investigation into the circumstances of the accident remains ongoing.

We hope the injured driver has a smooth recovery.

What Happens When a Vehicle Strikes Another From Behind?

Rear-end crashes usually occur when a following driver cannot stop before reaching a vehicle ahead. A driver may need additional stopping distance because of speed, distraction, following too closely, or roadway conditions.

Injury severity can vary based on vehicle size, speed, braking distance, and the position of occupants inside the vehicles. Seat belts can help keep occupants properly positioned and reduce the chance of serious harm during a collision.

Drivers can lower the risk of rear-end crashes by maintaining a safe following distance and watching several vehicles ahead. Extra space also gives a driver more time to react when traffic stops suddenly.
