Gulf Breeze, FL (August 27, 2026) – A 42-year-old Pensacola man was killed after his vehicle crashed on the Chappie James Bridge in Gulf Breeze early on Wednesday morning, August 26.

According to the Gulf Breeze Police Department, officers responded to the northbound exit ramp to 17th Avenue around 1:20 a.m. They found a silver Nissan Altima with heavy front-end damage after it struck a narrow steel nose crash cushion separating 17th Avenue from a pedestrian pathway.

The driver, identified as Travis Courtney Crow, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The scene was turned over to traffic homicide investigators.

The investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains ongoing.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of Travis Courtney Crow following his death. We also extend our thoughts to everyone affected by this tragic crash.

What Should Drivers Know About Crash Cushions?

Crash cushions are designed to absorb energy and reduce the severity of impacts when vehicles strike certain roadside structures. They are commonly placed near barriers, bridge approaches, lane divisions, and other fixed hazards. Despite these safety features, crashes involving roadside structures can still result in serious or fatal injuries.

Drivers should remain alert when approaching ramps, bridge exits, and areas where lanes change or narrow. Reducing speed and following roadway signs can provide more time to respond to unexpected changes. Distractions can also make it harder to recognize hazards before it is too late.

Drivers should keep their vehicles under control and remain within designated lanes, particularly on curves and exit ramps. Maintaining a safe speed for the roadway conditions can help reduce the risk of losing control. Seat belts should also be worn by every occupant on every trip because they can reduce the risk of severe injury during a collision.
