Lawrence, KS (June 21, 2026) – A 20-year-old man was seriously hurt late on Thursday night after his vehicle struck a police patrol car on Interstate 70 in Lawrence.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the collision was reported at 11:56 p.m. on June 18, on westbound I-70 near the McDonald Drive exit. Investigators said a 1999 Jeep Wrangler driven by Creighton Daggett of Lawrence was traveling west when it struck the rear of a Lawrence Police patrol vehicle that was blocking traffic.

After the collision, the Jeep left the roadway, entered the median, and hit a barrier wall. Officials said the patrol vehicles were positioned with emergency lights activated to direct motorists around traffic restrictions.

Daggett, who was wearing a seat belt and was the sole occupant of the Jeep, was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center with serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Three police officers at the site were not injured because they were outside their vehicles directing traffic at the time.

The circumstances surrounding the accident remain under review as investigators continue gathering information. We are thinking of Creighton Daggett and wish him a full recovery.

Why Secondary Traffic Control Areas Require Extra Driver Attention

Traffic control areas on highways are designed to guide motorists safely around road work, lane closures, emergencies, or other roadway disruptions. Drivers approaching these zones may encounter flashing lights, traffic cones, warning signs, and vehicles positioned to redirect traffic.

Visibility can become more challenging at night, especially when drivers are adjusting to changing traffic patterns or approaching illuminated emergency vehicles. Maintaining a safe speed and remaining alert to roadway conditions can help reduce the risk of collisions in these areas.

When a vehicle strikes a traffic-control vehicle or barrier, investigators often review roadway markings, lighting conditions, vehicle movements, and driver actions. These details can help establish how the collision occurred and provide a clearer understanding of the factors involved.
