Why Guardrails and Roadside Conditions Matter in Serious Crashes
Guardrails are designed to reduce the severity of roadway crashes by preventing vehicles from leaving the pavement or striking hazardous objects. When a vehicle loses control after being hit, barriers along highways and intersections can help redirect movement and lower the risk of rolling over or entering steep embankments.
Even with those protections, crashes involving high speeds or spinning vehicles can still lead to serious injuries. Vehicles that leave the roadway may encounter trees, uneven ground, or wooded terrain, which can increase the force experienced by occupants.
Medical helicopters are sometimes used when injuries require rapid treatment at specialized trauma centers. Air transport may also be necessary when crashes happen in rural regions where hospitals with advanced care are farther away.
