Manchester, CT (March 6, 2026) – A crash involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle on Wednesday morning, March 4, caused major damage along Interstate 84 westbound in Manchester.

The accident happened around 1:30 a.m. near Exit 62 in the HOV lane. Reports indicate the tractor-trailer struck another vehicle before crashing through a barrier on an overpass about 50 feet above the ground.

Both vehicles suffered significant damage during the collision. Despite the impact and damage to the barrier, neither vehicle fell from the overpass.

Emergency units arrived at the scene and evaluated the people involved. One person was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

A second person involved in the crash declined medical transport after being evaluated at the scene. No one required extrication from the damaged vehicles.

Crews also responded to a large oil spill caused by the crash. Environmental workers addressed the spill while transportation officials examined the overpass and began repairs to the damaged barrier.

The vehicles were later removed from the scene, allowing cleanup and repairs to continue.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they are provided.

Our thoughts go out to those injured as they receive medical care.

Does I-84 in Connecticut See Many Truck Crashes?

Interstate 84 is one of the busiest highways in Connecticut, and like many heavily traveled corridors, it does see a notable number of truck-related crashes. The highway runs through major population centers such as Danbury, Waterbury, and Hartford, which means large commercial vehicles share the road with dense commuter traffic on a daily basis. Those conditions contribute to a higher crash risk compared with less congested roadways.

Crash data illustrates the broader trend. In 2023, Connecticut recorded 1,736 crashes involving trucks or buses statewide, which shows how frequently large commercial vehicles are part of traffic incidents.

Fatal crash data shows a similar pattern: the state logged 342 traffic fatalities that year, with 52 involving large trucks, or about 15% of all fatal crashes. These numbers highlight that truck crashes represent a smaller share of total collisions, but still account for a significant portion of severe incidents.

Interstate 84 is frequently mentioned in state crash analyses. Connecticut State Police data has identified I-84 as one of the most common locations for fatal crashes in the state, reflecting its high traffic volumes and long stretches through urban areas.

Overall, the available statistics show that truck crashes do occur regularly in Connecticut, and busy corridors such as Interstate 84 experience a share of them because of heavy traffic, commercial freight movement, and complex driving conditions.
