Kelly Twp., PA (March 6, 2026) – Two drivers were seriously injured in a head-on crash Thursday evening, March 5, along Westbranch Highway, also known as Route 15, in Kelly Township.
Emergency units responded to the crash around 5:42 p.m. near the intersection with Silvermoon Lane. Authorities said a 2009 Dodge Charger driven by 42-year-old Jamie M. Vincent of Montandon was traveling north in the left lane when the driver lost control of the vehicle.
Investigators reported the Charger crossed the grass median and entered the southbound lanes of Route 15. The car then collided head-on with a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by 40-year-old Sandra Y. Ayala of Lewisburg, who was traveling south.
Both drivers were seriously hurt in the crash. Vincent and Ayala were taken to Geisinger Medical Center for treatment shortly after the collision.
The crash led to the closure of the southbound lanes of Route 15 for several hours while crews worked at the scene. Drivers were directed to use nearby roads during the closure before the highway reopened around 11:30 p.m.
The crash remains under investigation. Our thoughts are with those injured as they receive medical care and continue their recovery.
Head-On Crash Risks on Divided Highways
Long roadway stretches such as Route 15 often allow vehicles to travel at highway speeds. Even with a center median separating directions of travel, loss of control can lead to a vehicle crossing into opposing lanes.
Head-on collisions are among the most severe types of crashes because the force of impact involves vehicles moving toward each other. When a vehicle leaves its lane and enters oncoming traffic, drivers in the opposite direction may have little time to react.
Factors such as vehicle control, roadway conditions, and speed can influence how these crashes occur. Median design and driver response also affect whether a vehicle is able to remain within its lane on divided highways.
