Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I'm stopped in traffic near a highway crash?
Stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on unless you're told otherwise, turn on hazard lights, and watch your mirrors for approaching traffic. If you must get out, move well off the roadway and behind a barrier if one is available.
Why are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck?
Drivers approaching a scene often don't see stopped or slowed traffic in time, especially on interstates where speeds stay high. Rubbernecking and sudden lane changes near the scene add to the risk.
Why does following distance matter so much on highways?
More space between vehicles gives drivers time to react to sudden braking, debris, or a stopped car ahead. On a highway, a few extra car lengths can be the difference between stopping safely and rear-ending another vehicle.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Marengo, Illinois
If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash, try to move to a safe spot away from traffic if your vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so. Check yourself and passengers for injuries, and call 911 even if injuries seem minor, since some symptoms take hours to show up. Get checked by a medical professional, especially after any report of fire, impact, or possible entrapment, and keep records of any treatment. Exchange information with other drivers when possible, but let responding officers document the scene and determine what happened.
