Memphis, TN (February 27, 2026) – Four people were hospitalized after a late-night crash involving two vehicles in Southwest Memphis. The accident happened around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25, at the intersection of E Mitchell Rd and S Third St.

Emergency units responded to the scene after a Lexus traveling at a high rate of speed ran a red light and struck a Dodge Ram that was attempting to turn onto E Mitchell Rd. The impact caused severe damage to the truck and resulted in multiple serious injuries.

Two passengers inside the Dodge Ram were ejected during the collision. A third passenger in the truck was knocked unconscious. A passenger in the Lexus suffered critical injuries and told officials that the driver fled the scene after the crash.

Three people were taken to Regional One Health in critical condition, while a fourth person was hospitalized with injuries described as non-critical. Officials also cited the driver of the Dodge Ram for driving without a valid license and without proof of insurance.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash and are searching for the driver of the Lexus involved. We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.

How Speeding Increases the Risk of Serious Injury in Crashes

Speeding reduces the amount of time drivers have to react to traffic signals, turning vehicles, or unexpected hazards. When a vehicle travels at high speed, the force of impact during a crash becomes much greater. This often leads to more severe injuries for everyone involved.

High-speed crashes also increase the likelihood that passengers will be thrown from vehicles. Seat belts help lower this risk, but the force of impact can still cause serious harm. Vehicles may also spin, roll over, or strike other objects after the initial collision.

Intersections are especially dangerous when speeding is involved. Drivers may not have enough time to stop at red lights or yield to turning vehicles. Slowing down and following traffic signals helps reduce the likelihood of severe crashes.
