Why Pedestrian Crashes on Interstates Are Especially Dangerous
Interstates are designed for higher-speed travel, which increases the danger for pedestrians. Drivers may have less time to react to someone on the roadway. Even at moderate highway speeds, pedestrian crashes often result in serious injury.
Visibility can also be limited at night. Darkness and fast-moving traffic make it harder for drivers to see pedestrians ahead. Curves, hills, and vehicle headlights may further reduce reaction time.
Pedestrians on interstates may be there due to vehicle trouble or other emergencies. These situations increase risk because interstates lack sidewalks or safe walking areas.
