Frequently Asked Questions
What makes crashes involving large trucks more dangerous than typical car crashes?
Large trucks like dump trucks weigh many times more than passenger vehicles, so a collision or rollover involving one tends to cause more severe damage and more serious injuries than a crash between two cars.
What are a truck's blind spots, and why do they matter?
Large trucks have wide blind spots along both sides, behind the vehicle, and directly in front of the cab. Drivers near these zones may not be visible to the truck operator, which can contribute to crashes at intersections and during turns.
What typically causes large-truck accidents?
Common factors include mechanical failure, driver fatigue, lost control on turns or uneven terrain, and visibility issues at intersections. Investigators typically examine vehicle maintenance records, road conditions, and driver history after a crash like this one.
What is an underride crash?
An underride crash happens when a smaller vehicle slides partly or fully beneath a truck's trailer or body during a collision, usually leading to severe injuries because the truck's frame can intrude into the smaller vehicle's passenger area. It is unclear whether this occurred in the Meredith crash.
