Pedestrian Risks Along Interstate Highways
Routes carrying regional traffic, like Interstate 95, can experience delays and hazards when pedestrians enter the roadway. When incidents occur near busy highway corridors in areas such as Midway, emergency crews often focus on securing the travel lanes and improving visibility around the scene.
Interstates are designed primarily for high-speed vehicle travel, and pedestrians are rarely expected in these areas. When a person walks along or enters the roadway, drivers may have very little time to react due to the speed of passing traffic.
Stopping on highway shoulders can sometimes place people near fast-moving vehicles. Limited lighting, roadway curves, and traffic volume may also influence how quickly drivers can notice someone on or near the roadway.
