Milton, FL (January 26, 2026) – A tragic incident in Milton has renewed concerns over road safety after a 68-year-old man drove off the end of Ward Basin Road and into the Yellow River Friday night. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man was pronounced dead at the scene after his truck was found submerged near Brown’s Fish Camp.
The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. when the man’s vehicle plowed through a wooden gate, took down a reflective stop sign, and entered the river. Investigators noted roughly 50 feet of skid marks, indicating a last-minute attempt to brake before the fatal plunge. The exact circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
Residents say this is not the first time such an accident has occurred in the area. Some, like Samuel Parish, who has lived nearby for 20 years, reported witnessing multiple crashes at the dead-end. Another resident, Josh Yager, told reporters he had previously helped retrieve a vehicle from the same location.
The abrupt end of Ward Basin Rd—where it transitions into Fish Camp Road at the river’s edge—has long been a source of concern. While some neighbors are calling for improved safety measures like additional signage or enhanced lighting, others argue that the current features, including flashing warning lights, rumble strips, reflective fencing, and dead-end signs, are already sufficient.
Officials from Santa Rosa County noted that the speed limit along the road decreases from 45 to 35 mph before it terminates, and that multiple warning systems have been in place for decades. However, witnesses and troopers at the scene stated the vehicle may have been traveling at speeds between 75 and 85 mph at the time of the crash. There are also unconfirmed reports that a second vehicle was pursuing the man’s truck in an attempt to stop it.
This tragic event has prompted renewed scrutiny of whether current safety features are enough—or if more can be done to prevent further loss of life at this dangerous location.
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.
